Koko Black x Dan Hunter —

A great Australian collaboration

What do you get when a great Australian chef collides with a great Australian chocolatier? Green ants in ganache, spotted gum honey crumble, and a compelling creative brief. For Koko Black’s collaboration with Dan Hunter of Brae, we created an identity to represent a coming together of two creative forces at the top of their game.

Inspired by the skill required from both practitioners to bring native Australian ingredients and botanicals together in fine chocolate, our approach came to life in the idea of ‘artful balance.’

Art direction for campaign photography

Through graphic symmetry, and complementary, yet unexpected colour pairings of muted Australian tones with bright gold and citrus, the packaging embodies the unique flavour profiles at play, while the recurring X device also becomes a symbol for collaboration.

Art direction too speaks to the idea of equilibrium — transforming and elevating products to the realm of fine art. Negative space, dramatic shadow play, and a seemingly precarious, yet very intentional placement of pralines and blocks reflects the very methods that created them.

As the first iteration of the new Koko Black, this special range of chocolate signals a new chapter. This is a Koko that pushes boundaries of flavours and ingredients, that seeks to partner with like-minded visionaries, and a brand that encourages audiences everywhere to try something new.
