Studio Round has been awarded a Premier's Design Award for the Golden Age of Couture.
The 2010 Premier's Design Awards ceremony, part of the State of Design festival, was held on Wednesday 21 July at the Pixel building in Carlton. This highly prestigious award celebrates design contributions across economic, environmental and social initiatives. The award highlights effective, sustainable and strategic design that has been used to innovate, increase productivity and inspire.
This design effectiveness award recognises the successful design collaboration with Bendigo Art Gallery and the City of Greater Bendigo and demonstrates how design can add value to business. We are privileged to work with brave clients. And we feel very honoured to be recognised in this way.

Studio Round has been engaged by the National Trust to work with architects Tandem Art Studio to bring the Polly Woodside interpretive exhibition to life. The interactive museum experience is scheduled to reopen its doors to the public late October 2010. The Polly is a beautiful ship, and is berthed in one of the best spots in Melbourne to enjoy vistas of the city.
This commission builds on the identity development work we have already completed for the Polly as well as other National Trust properties.

Port Philip Estate is the new kid on the block in the acclaimed Mornington Peninsula wine region. Designed by Wood Marsh architects and home to Kooyong and Port Philip Estate wines, Port Philip Estate opens its doors
to the public early December.
The Port Philip Estate project was one Studio Round was happy to sink its teeth into, encompassing all aspects from the identity to the printed collateral, signage, website and advertising.
It was the building itself that inspired our creation of the marque that has become the defining feature of the identity and collateral. The marque was hand-crafted; with many hours spent painting, sculpting and experimenting with materials until we got it right.
The shape mirrors the layout of the buildings when seen from above, while the rich textured nature echoes the rammed-earth and landscape; our aim being to create something unique to the destination, that recollected the experience of being there. For us, it was a greatly rewarding project to guide from start to finish and we recommend the day trip down to check it out!

Broadsheet is Melbourne's just launched go-to-guide. Designed by Studio Round, the comprehensive website is an ever changing current event's guide and directory for the city's in-the-know community.
Still growing, the site is soon
to have a regular column from
Round favourite Andrew McConnell
and already has a range of insightful articles from some high profile sources including the director
of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion
Festival Karen Webster.
We're in love with the Directory! Goodbye Yellow Pages!

and cities shape people.
The exhibition is part of the
State of Design Festival.
On at City gallery until

Opened this week, Charcoal Lane
is an exciting restaurant and unique initiative located in Gertrude Street, Melbourne. Studio Round has worked closely with Tandem Architects
and Mission Australia, in partnership
with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service, to create the identity
and signage. Charcoal Lane provides the opportunity for indigenous
and disadvantaged youth to transform their lives through training and working in the hospitality industry.
All profits from the restaurant go
to supporting this important program that provides up to 48 youths with traineeship and apprenticeship opportunities each year.
The restaurant is located in a Victorian era bank building in Gertrude Street, once a well-known community centre for indigenous Melbournians.
The name 'Charcoal Lane' pays tribute to an old briquette factory that was also located in the area, which was an informal meeting place for the indigenous community to gather and share stories, as referenced in an Archie Roach song by the same name.
Book now to offer your support.

The Bendigo Art Gallery signage playfully and colourfully extends the gallery identity onto the street.
The signage is designed to clearly identify the location and guide visitors to the gallery entrance.

Its AGIdeas time of the year again. The conference celebrates excellence in design. As part of the conference, Studio Round hosted a Studio Access evening. Fourteen young designers from various disciplines joined us for pizza, beer and a conversation about process and collaboration.
The group were given an overview of some key studio projects and description of the process that led to the final outcomes. We then finished the evening with a hands on exercise. Each student was given two characters of the alphabet to redraw. The aim was to create a visual expression of the night. Once the group had pen in hand and a brief to meet, conversation and collaboration flowed. Thanks to all who participated.
We trust you enjoyed it as much as we did, and hope you left with an insight into our studio, process and the design industry.
AGideas on in Melbourne, 4 – 7 May 2009.

Studio Round's signage solution for NFL's docklands HQ is now complete. The final item to be installed was the ground floor lobby sign. The solid Elba marble sign weighs in at approximately 1.3 tonnes and measures almost 11 metres in length.
The impressive sign clearly communicates that you have arrived at National Foods. It is bold, provides
a sense of quality, authenticity and longevity. In addition to giving NFL ownership of the foyer, the sign is sympathetic to the architecture and use of materials in the shared entrance.

Understanding your rights when it comes to protecting copyright and your intellectual property (IP) can seem complicated. Working with Design Victoria, Studio Round have created two 'How to Kits' to help simplify
and explain the different types of
IP protection available to designers,
and help to increase awareness of
IP issues as they affect the graphic and industrial design industries.
Featured in both Desktop (issue #248 April 2009) and Design Quarterly
(Autumn 2009) the How to Kits are a valuable resource for all graphic and industrial designers. Available upon request from Design Victoria.

We're constantly surprised how quickly the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival comes and goes each year. And this year was no exception.
Now the hangover has largely subsided, we're delighted to announce that Studio Round's Creative Director, Michaela Webb, was invited to discuss her experience of working with the architect of Cumulus Inc. to produce the brand identity for the restaurant.

An exhibition of bronze sculptures by Australian artist Robert Klippel opens at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney, 4 April 2009. If you haven't yet visited
the Carriage Works gallery by Melbourne’s premier art dealer, then
you are missing out. Its qualities are monumental in all senses of the word.
On until 2 May 2009.

The latest exhibition to open at City Gallery is Community Treasures: 100 Years of The Royal Historic Society of Victoria. The exhibition presents a selection of historic gems collected by the Royal Historical Society over, well, the last 100 years.

Collaboration is one of the central themes in the latest issue of Artichoke, which features Studio Round's work on the cover and contains the studio's thoughts on this topic. The cover image was originally produced for the New Views exhibition, held at Melbourne Museum 15 November – 15 February 2009, which responds to questions about the future of graphic design.
The studio would like to take this opportunity to again thank those who ate and drank with us and helped form our response. In no particular order, they are Mathew Herbert, Geoff Nees, Peter Bennetts, Kate Rhodes, James and Scottie Cameron, and Warren Taylor.
We’d especially like to thank Peter Bennetts for photographing the lunch.
And congratulations to Kate Rhodes
on her first issue as Editor of Artichoke, (we think she’s done a great job!).
