Refugee Legal is Australia’s largest provider of free legal assistance to people seeking asylum, refugees and disadvantaged migrants. Led by preeminent human rights lawyer David Manne, this not-for-profit organisation has been instrumental in assisting our most vulnerable people, helping them to arrive and stay safely in our country.
David came to us with a need to re-think the way his Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre (RILC) presented itself. Government funding for legal assistance had been cut by 87 percent, and RILC now needed to become not just a legal centre, but a fundraising entity to ensure it could continue to fight in the face of increasingly severe migration laws.
This required a fundamental change in storytelling. To build a compelling brand behind Manne and his cause, we proposed a radical simplification, replacing RILC with a new and more powerful name: Refugee Legal. Our new identity brought language to the fore, communicating the importance of their work with clear and accessible typography that would stand out across print ads, event banners and a new, more user-friendly website.
The results are clear: in the year the new brand launched, Refugee Legal was able to assist over 12,300 clients, a 46% increase from the previous year. Since then, we’ve continued to work with Refugee Legal on their campaigns and communications, and we hope that—with the help of the Australian people—we can start to see the change in policy that our country so sorely needs.
