Studio Round is excited to be involved in Terrible Twos, a one night charity exhibition hosted by Desktop magazine and The Design Kids.
We will be working with an emerging designer to create a visual response to a compound word. The final piece will be up for a silent auction, with the proceeds going to our chosen charity.
Be involved by coming to the event
at No Vacancy Gallery, QV Melbourne Thursday 7th June from 6pm.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Mama Baba is the latest dining offer from George Calombaris and his team
at Made Establishment (previously Press Club Group). The restaurant
can be found in the basement of Lili Apartments in South Yarra.
Studio Round worked closely with
the client and new kid on the block architects Joyce + Made to deliver
on George's vision to create a dining experience that serves to remind patrons of the simple food lovingly cooked at home by our parents and grandparents.
Mama Baba pays homage to George's Mediterranean roots: 'mama' in
honour of his Cypriot mother and 'baba' after his Italian-Greek father. We illustrated two characters to reference the fusion of the cooking traditions. The playful Mama Baba characters are central to our identity system, which includes food and drink menus, drink coasters and restaurant stationary.
We also worked with the team to develop the customer experience
which informed staff uniforms, table settings and the informal style of service. The overall experience stands apart from anything the group has previously delivered.

After an extremely successful 3
year collaboration and shared studio environment with Round, Broadsheet has come of age and flown the coop. During our time working together, Round has overseen Broadsheet grow from a start up idea to becoming widely recognised as the leading voice of what's worth leaving the comfort of your lounge chair to eat, drink, visit and experience in Melbourne. Broadsheet also launched the Sydney version of its site in November 2011,
and has gone on to successfully
commercialise its site with advertising due to the continued growth in visitation numbers and
its appeal to a diverse niche
target market.
During our time working together
Round created the name and designed Broadsheet's brand identity, stationery, website, electronic newsletter, print publications
and rate card. Another significant
contribution was realising the idea of making Broadsheet a tangible
experience for its readers through
the Broadsheet cafe, which popped up as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival 2011.
Founding Director, Nick Shelton, has stated Round's input into Broadsheet is "a major factor in our success."
To find out more about how we created the Broadsheet brand and helped it become a viable online business,

We have been working with Molecule
and ProvanBuilt to make our studio
a better place to be.
For those of you who have called us or visited us in the studio over the last month, thanks for putting up with the noise, paint cans and sometimes erratic phone system!
We hope you get a chance to visit
us and experience the space first hand in the not too distant future.

Golden Fields is Andrew McConnell's newest, and first, restaurant south of the river on Fitzroy St in St Kilda. The restaurant's identity is yet another successful collaboration between Studio Round and Andrew, with the confident result demonstrating the depth of the relationship, mutual respect and understanding that has arisen from past projects, which also include 312, Cumulus Inc., Cutler and Co.
The brief for the identity was to be as reductive as possible. Our inspiration was taken from the 'horizon line' opposite the restaurant, a view where the park meets the city. Adopting a more crafted and tactile approach to the suite of printed materials was also important to contrast with the hard and shiny materials and finishes in the restaurant.
The menu is a reflection of Andrew's time spent in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It has a modern Asian feel to it. And if you haven't tried one of his already famous Lobster Roll's, then trust us, they are well worth a visit!
A special thanks to Scottie Cameron
for the beautiful photography, Cibi
for the props and to Dion from Projects of Imagination for the chicken foot.

Studio Round is pleased to have collaborated with Teage and Tina Ezard yet again for their new restaurant Black by Ezard.
Black is a contemporary grill situated in Sydney's newly renovated casino The Star, where the Ezards have joined other local and international talents, including David Chang, Chase Kojima, Steve Manfredi and Adriano Zumbo.
Black is a sexy and sleek restaurant with exquisite views over Sydney Harbour.
The food sets a new direction for Teage. The progressive Asian-inspired fare of Ezards and Gingerboy has gone. Instead, expect a range of high-quality Australian cuts of seafood and meat, prepared, cooked and served in an upmarket grill.
Studio Round worked closely with the Ezards and The Star team to develop the naming, identity, art direction, menus, wine lists, stationery, signage and website holding page.

This year we decided to give you a glimpse into what it's really like in the studio when the phones stop ringing and we get a moment to crank a bit of Pseudo Echo. Click here to watch us chucking some serious shapes, as well as some general callisthenics.
Anyhow, we hope that you have a lovely holiday season and enjoy a bit of safe fun yourselves. Big thanks to all of our clients and collaborators for making '11 such a successful and memorable year. Let the good times continue to roll in 2012!
FYI – the studio will be closed from December 23 until January 9.

On Thursday 1st December Craft Victoria announced the winners of the Fresh! awards.
For the second consecutive year Studio Round has sponsored the Brand Development Award, which allows an emerging graduate the opportunity to work with the Round team to develop a communication device.
The body of work by each finalists was extremely high, with all graduates worthy recipients of partaking in the Fresh! exhibition, however after viewing her work we felt Allona Goren, RMIT, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art - Gold and Silversmithing) would be the designer Studio Round would be able to assist in realising the development of her identity.
We are currently working with last year's recipient, Inari Kiuru, another RMIT Gold and Silversmithing Graduate and will keep you posted on the outcome, as we will with our collaboration with Allona, which we look forward to in 2012.

Architects Anja de Spa, Richard Fleming and Jarrod Haberfield founded Molecule in 2010 with the idea that inspired minds work best together.
As a practice, Molecule works across the disciplines of architecture, interiors and art direction.
Studio Round worked closely with
the Molecule team to develop an identity that communicates the client’s multifaceted approach.
A kit of branded emboss tools,
stamps and templates were developed that can be reconfigured and applied in a number of ways, giving the
client a flexible solution that’s
able to evolve and grow with the
client’s needs. www.moleculeweb.com

Canberra–based property developers Molonglo Group approached Studio Round to create a retail tenancy information package for their latest mixed use tenancy – Nishi. Located in the heart of the NewActon precinct, Nishi will include two cafes, an informal restaurant, a bookshop and another retail space.
We focussed on what potential retailers would be most concerned with, the financial benefits. Thus our response gave prominence to those supporting statistics and facts. We brought this somewhat dry data to life by commissioning hand-fabricated wooden charts and graphs crafted out of recycled timbers. This echoed the
fact that Nishi is the most radically sustainable building complex in Australia and much of it's character is created through the use of recycled timber and reconstituted materials.

The highly anticipated world premiere of The White Wedding Dress: 200 years of Wedding Fashion officially opened at the Bendigo Art Gallery on August 1 this year.
A touring exhibition from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum collection of wedding gowns from the early 1800s to the present day, the exhibition explores the history of the wedding dress using individual garments and their histories to illuminate two centuries of romance, tradition and innovation.
Studio Round worked closely with Bendigo Art Gallery to develop an identity for the exhibition inspired by the fine lace work that adorns many of the dresses on display. The identity was extended through promotional materials, signage and merchandising.

Founded in 1990, ISM Objects is an award-winning supplier of contemporary lighting solutions. With studios in Sydney and Melbourne, ISM delivers innovative projects that have earned the respect of both their local and international peers.
ISM approached Studio Round to redesign their outdated Flash website in order to create a more user-friendly and mature web presence.
We worked with efront to create an easy to update CMS while maintaining
a look and feel that still captured
an element of the playfulness that can be found in their lighting designs.
We created a visual language that built upon the current identity and helped to inject a brand personality that enabled ISM to further differentiate themselves from other like businesses.

Studio Round would like to congratulate Dr Liz Hallam for the opening of Flourish, a paediatric clinic where medical expertise embraces 21st Century thinking and design. The practice focuses on the physical, mental and emotional needs of children in an environment that caters to the needs of adults as much as children.
The human centred practice is supported online by an information
and resource rich website, built around the Health Bank, which
offers professional advice and recommendations to parents and expecting parents free of charge.
Studio Round have worked with
Dr Hallam over the last 18 months
to help bring the practice to life.

On Wednesday 27th July, Studio Round's Creative Director Michaela Webb, will be speaking at DIA's Top 5x5 colour event.

Studio Round has worked with Broadsheet to create our very first iphone app!
An extension of Broadsheet online and in print, the new iPhone app provides access to over 500 profiles of the city’s best cafes, restaurants, bars and shops, as selected by the Broadsheet editorial team.
Get culturally active in Melbourne and download it now via the app store.
Studio Round would like to congratulate Dylan Brady, Dirk Zimmermann and the team at Studio 505 on receiving the 2011 Victorian Architecture sustainability award for the Pixel building.
Located at the corner of Queensberry and Bouverie streets, Carlton, Pixel is the greenest building in Australia and the only carbon neutral building in the world.
We are currently working with Studio 505 on their website. Stay tuned to find out when it goes live. www.studio505.com.au

Following a four year redevelopment,
Polly Woodside reopened to the public early this year. Housed in Dukes Dry Dock, alongside the Melbourne Convention Centre she is a unique experience, a tall ship in the heart of the city.
Round was engaged by the National Trust, and worked alongside architects Tandem Design Studio to bring the Polly Woodside to life. Initially creating an identity and logo to promote the Polly Woodside and museum experience. Then extending and developing this identity story throughout the interpretive display inside the museum.
Typography, colour, texture and information graphics take the visitor on a journey over 140 years. From the Polly Woodside's construction in Belfast in 1885 to her restoration by the National Trust in Melbourne during the 1970s in the new Polly Woodside Visitor Gallery.

Broadsheet Cafe has opened its doors to the public for a brief stint as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. Open for just 11 days from the 4th to the 14th of March, the cafe is a curated selection of Melbourne's premiere cafes and coffee roasters
Each day the cafe is run by a different operator with Seven Seeds, Dead Man Espresso, Proud Mary, Five Senses, The Premises and Market Lane all taking over the helm.
Studio Round is proud to have continued our close working relationship with Broadsheet to extend the Broadsheet identity and visual language into a physical environment.
It has been a great process getting out from behind the computer; building, sign writing and collaborating with some great local creatives to realise the space. With furniture supplied by local powerhouses Jardan and the amazing terrariums by Lily Daley.
Be sure to drop in before the 14th for some great coffee.

On Thursday 2nd December Craft Victoria announced the winners of the Fresh! awards. Studio Round was proud to sponsor the new Brand Development Award, an award which allows an emerging design graduate the opportunity to work with the Round team to develop an identity, logo or packaging concept.
Whilst all the finalists were potentially worthy recipients of the award, with the body of work by each finalist challenging the parameters of craft and design, we decided Inari Kiuru RMIT, Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art - Gold and Silversmithing) to be the designer whose aspirations would benefit most from such an award.
The team at Round look forward to working with Inari in 2011, and will keep you posted on our collaboration.

Round has once again worked closely with the team at Bendigo Art Gallery (BAG) to create an identity for the recently opened Post Office Gallery. We developed a unique logo mark and identity system that works across ever changing and varied exhibition content. The identity also needed to include a visual link back to the BAG identity suite.
The Post Office Gallery is a public gallery space located in the former post office in Pall Mall. Operated by the team from Bendigo Art Gallery, it will be a place for the display and interpretation of the region’s history through a dynamic and changing exhibition schedule.
The Post Office Gallery identity was inspired by the gallery location and
the post office's strong link with the social history of the area. It is a vibrant, contemporary mark that sits in striking contrast to the Renaissance Revivalist architecture of the post office, built in 1887.
The inaugural exhibition at the Post Office Gallery, Naming Bendigo: evolution of a city's identity 1836 – 1891 opened last week.

Studio Round was commisioned to refresh the current brand identity and associated marketing collateral for 33 Wattle Road in Hawthorn. We developed a new visual langauge as well as messaging that would resonate with the 'baby-boomer/empty nester' demographic.
We developed a logotype based on the Wattle tree, an iconic piece of Australian Flora often linked with nostalgic childhood memories of simpler times. The concept promotes the luscious greenscapes of the development as well as Hawthorn.
We structured the “It’s About...”
communications around three pillars — space (expansive outdoors, roomy
interiors), design (beautifully finished, exquisite detail) and luxury (pricepoint) in order to paint a complete picture of the offer.

Studio Round is pleased to announce our Brand Development Award for Craft Victoria's Annual Fresh Graduate Exhibition. This is a new exciting collaboration with Craft Victoria, our award will help assist a graduate further their opportunities in their chosen field.
Kate Mansell will select the recipient of the award from the finalists selected from the judging panel. The award will run over two years as we continue to encourage emerging new talent.

Round has once again worked with Undertow Media, DCE and The Australian Film Institute to create the identity and suite of collateral for the AFI Awards.
The 2010 look references the emotional impact of the film industry on audiences. Working with amazing local photographer She is Frank, we altered the focus to create a pair of voyeuristic images of film goers.
We also developed a typographic language, inspired by mobile text colloquialisms, to highlight the major sponsors contribution.

The latest exhibition at the City Gallery by Christos Tsiolkas and Zoe Ali A New Jerusalem is a photographic and written exploration of physical places of worship in Melbourne.
Round has once again worked closely with the curators and the City of Melbourne team to produce the exhibition identity, catalogue and signage. Taking inspiration from the monospaced typographic language of church notice boards the monochromatic identity became a system to display written words within the exhibition.
This weekend Saturday 13 November
at 2pm the gallery will be hosting
a curator talk, in which Christos
and Zoe will be expanding on the process and themes of the exhibition. Bookings are essential through the gallery 9658 9042 or citygallery@melbourne.vic.gov.au
The show runs through 22 January 2011 and is a beautiful representation of the diversity of thought within Melbourne.

The recently completed design refresh for Broadsheet has gone live. Taking into consideration feedback from users and site growth into it's current form the design tweaks have evolved the website to include more content whilst maintaing the clean, clear and easily navigable principles of the original site.
The refresh has included the launch of the visitors section, a go-to-guide for travellers to Melbourne and integrated Facebook to further expand the social network aspect of the site. Work is also underway on the Summer print issue, so if you're craving surf, sand and summer culture fret not, Broadsheet will land in cafés, bars and galleries early December.

Studio Round has been awarded a Premier's Design Award for the Golden Age of Couture.
The 2010 Premier's Design Awards ceremony, part of the State of Design festival, was held on Wednesday 21 July at the Pixel building in Carlton. This highly prestigious award celebrates design contributions across economic, environmental and social initiatives. The award highlights effective, sustainable and strategic design that has been used to innovate, increase productivity and inspire.
This design effectiveness award recognises the successful design collaboration with Bendigo Art Gallery and the City of Greater Bendigo and demonstrates how design can add value to business. We are privileged to work with brave clients. And we feel very honoured to be recognised in this way.

Studio Round has been engaged by the National Trust to work with architects Tandem Art Studio to bring the Polly Woodside interpretive exhibition to life. The interactive museum experience is scheduled to reopen its doors to the public late October 2010. The Polly is a beautiful ship, and is berthed in one of the best spots in Melbourne to enjoy vistas of the city.
This commission builds on the identity development work we have already completed for the Polly as well as other National Trust properties.

Port Philip Estate is the new kid on the block in the acclaimed Mornington Peninsula wine region. Designed by Wood Marsh architects and home to Kooyong and Port Philip Estate wines, Port Philip Estate opens its doors
to the public early December.
The Port Philip Estate project was one Studio Round was happy to sink its teeth into, encompassing all aspects from the identity to the printed collateral, signage, website and advertising.
It was the building itself that inspired our creation of the marque that has become the defining feature of the identity and collateral. The marque was hand-crafted; with many hours spent painting, sculpting and experimenting with materials until we got it right.
The shape mirrors the layout of the buildings when seen from above, while the rich textured nature echoes the rammed-earth and landscape; our aim being to create something unique to the destination, that recollected the experience of being there. For us, it was a greatly rewarding project to guide from start to finish and we recommend the day trip down to check it out!

Broadsheet is Melbourne's just launched go-to-guide. Designed by Studio Round, the comprehensive website is an ever changing current event's guide and directory for the city's in-the-know community.
Still growing, the site is soon
to have a regular column from
Round favourite Andrew McConnell
and already has a range of insightful articles from some high profile sources including the director
of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion
Festival Karen Webster.
We're in love with the Directory! Goodbye Yellow Pages!

Studio Round has recently completed the new website for Peter Bennetts.

and cities shape people.
The exhibition is part of the
State of Design Festival.
On at City gallery until

Opened this week, Charcoal Lane
is an exciting restaurant and unique initiative located in Gertrude Street, Melbourne. Studio Round has worked closely with Tandem Architects
and Mission Australia, in partnership
with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service, to create the identity
and signage. Charcoal Lane provides the opportunity for indigenous
and disadvantaged youth to transform their lives through training and working in the hospitality industry.
All profits from the restaurant go
to supporting this important program that provides up to 48 youths with traineeship and apprenticeship opportunities each year.
The restaurant is located in a Victorian era bank building in Gertrude Street, once a well-known community centre for indigenous Melbournians.
The name 'Charcoal Lane' pays tribute to an old briquette factory that was also located in the area, which was an informal meeting place for the indigenous community to gather and share stories, as referenced in an Archie Roach song by the same name.
Book now to offer your support.

The Bendigo Art Gallery signage playfully and colourfully extends the gallery identity onto the street.
The signage is designed to clearly identify the location and guide visitors to the gallery entrance.

Its AGIdeas time of the year again. The conference celebrates excellence in design. As part of the conference, Studio Round hosted a Studio Access evening. Fourteen young designers from various disciplines joined us for pizza, beer and a conversation about process and collaboration.
The group were given an overview of some key studio projects and description of the process that led to the final outcomes. We then finished the evening with a hands on exercise. Each student was given two characters of the alphabet to redraw. The aim was to create a visual expression of the night. Once the group had pen in hand and a brief to meet, conversation and collaboration flowed. Thanks to all who participated.
We trust you enjoyed it as much as we did, and hope you left with an insight into our studio, process and the design industry.
AGideas on in Melbourne, 4 – 7 May 2009.

Studio Round's signage solution for NFL's docklands HQ is now complete. The final item to be installed was the ground floor lobby sign. The solid Elba marble sign weighs in at approximately 1.3 tonnes and measures almost 11 metres in length.
The impressive sign clearly communicates that you have arrived at National Foods. It is bold, provides
a sense of quality, authenticity and longevity. In addition to giving NFL ownership of the foyer, the sign is sympathetic to the architecture and use of materials in the shared entrance.

Understanding your rights when it comes to protecting copyright and your intellectual property (IP) can seem complicated. Working with Design Victoria, Studio Round have created two 'How to Kits' to help simplify
and explain the different types of
IP protection available to designers,
and help to increase awareness of
IP issues as they affect the graphic and industrial design industries.
Featured in both Desktop (issue #248 April 2009) and Design Quarterly
(Autumn 2009) the How to Kits are a valuable resource for all graphic and industrial designers. Available upon request from Design Victoria.

We're constantly surprised how quickly the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival comes and goes each year. And this year was no exception.
Now the hangover has largely subsided, we're delighted to announce that Studio Round's Creative Director, Michaela Webb, was invited to discuss her experience of working with the architect of Cumulus Inc. to produce the brand identity for the restaurant.

An exhibition of bronze sculptures by Australian artist Robert Klippel opens at Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney, 4 April 2009. If you haven't yet visited

Collaboration is one of the central themes in the latest issue of Artichoke, which features Studio Round's work on the cover and contains the studio's thoughts on this topic. The cover image was originally produced for the New Views exhibition, held at Melbourne Museum 15 November – 15 February 2009, which responds to questions about the future of graphic design.
The studio would like to take this opportunity to again thank those who ate and drank with us and helped form our response. In no particular order, they are Mathew Herbert, Geoff Nees, Peter Bennetts, Kate Rhodes, James and Scottie Cameron, and Warren Taylor.
We’d especially like to thank Peter Bennetts for photographing the lunch.
And congratulations to Kate Rhodes
on her first issue as Editor of Artichoke, (we think she’s done a great job!).
